Tried-and-Tested Rainfall Monitoring

The Nylex Rain Gauge 1000, also known as the Nylex 250mm Professional Rain Gauge, model RG1000 or reference MW/RAINFALL-250, helps users record rainfall instead of relying on visual estimates.

Reliable rainfall records support better irrigation decisions, help reduce unnecessary watering and make it easier to compare wet and dry periods over time.

  • Measures light showers and heavy tropical rainfall.
  • Transparent body allows quick visual checking.
  • UV-protected, high-grade non-yellowing plastic.
  • Supplied with mounting bracket and wood screws.
  • Simple manual operation with no battery required.
  • Suitable for professional and home applications.
  • Product packaging indicates a 2-year warranty.

Why Measure Rainfall?

One millimetre of rainfall is approximately equal to one litre of water over one square metre. Recording rainfall therefore gives growers and gardeners a practical reference when reviewing irrigation needs.

How the 250mm Rain Gauge Works

The funnel directs rainfall into the numbered inner measuring cylinder, which is calibrated in 1mm increments up to 25mm. Once the inner measure is full, excess water is retained in the larger outer cylinder for the overflow reading method.

Correct Installation for Better Accuracy

1

Select an Open Site

Choose level ground away from trees, buildings, roofs, fences and other obstructions.

2

Fix the Bracket

Mount the supplied bracket securely to a sturdy post with the enclosed wood screws.

3

Keep It Vertical

Position the gauge truly upright, near ground level or at the lowest safe height.

4

Allow Clear Distance

As a guide, place it about twice as far away as the height of nearby buildings or trees.

For more representative observations: the manufacturer guide recommends installing two gauges about 6 metres apart and averaging the readings where wind may affect collection.

How to Read Rainfall

Reading Up to 25mm

  • Remove the catchment funnel.
  • Lift out the inner measuring cylinder.
  • Hold it upright at eye level.
  • Read the water level using the calibrated 1mm graduations.

Reading Above 25mm

  • Empty and count each full inner-cylinder measure.
  • Pour the remaining outer-cylinder water into the tube.
  • Add every full measure and the final residue.
  • Empty and reassemble the gauge after recording.

Recording tip: read the gauge at the same time each day, such as 9:00 a.m., and check it promptly after exceptionally heavy rain.

Use for Rainfall Decisions

A rain gauge records rainfall received at its location. Irrigation decisions should also consider soil type, drainage, crop stage, root depth and local weather.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 1mm of rainfall mean?
One millimetre of rainfall is approximately equivalent to one litre of water spread over one square metre, before allowing for run-off, evaporation or interception.
Does the Nylex Rain Gauge measure up to 25mm or 250mm?
The removable inner tube measures up to 25mm. Rainfall above 25mm overflows into the larger outer cylinder, allowing a total rainfall measurement of up to 250mm.
What graduations are shown on the inner cylinder?
The inner measuring cylinder measures rainfall up to 25mm in professionally calibrated 1mm increments, as specified in the product calibration guide.
Where should I install the rain gauge?
Install it vertically on level, open ground where rainfall is not blocked by buildings, trees, fences or roofs. As a guide, keep it about twice as far from an obstruction as that obstruction is high.
Can this rain gauge be used on farms and plantations?
Yes. It is suitable for farms, plantations, vineyards, nurseries, market gardens and other areas where rainfall records support irrigation and water-management decisions.
Is it suitable for a home garden?
Yes. Home gardeners can use it to compare natural rainfall with sprinkler, drip or manual watering needs.
Does it require batteries?
No. The Nylex Rain Gauge 1000 is a manual measuring instrument and does not require batteries or an electrical connection.

Complete Rainfall Gauge Calibration & Calculation Guide

This technical section explains the mathematics behind rainfall depth and the Nylex Rain Gauge 1000 calibration. It first shows why 1mm of rainfall equals 1 litre of water per square metre, then calculates the expected collected volume for the gauge's 101mm diameter collector.

Complete Nylex Rain Gauge 1000 calibration diagram explaining why 1mm rainfall equals 1 litre per square metre and why 10mm rainfall collects approximately 80ml

Part 1: Why 1mm Rainfall = 1L/m²

Rainfall in millimetres describes the depth of water spread evenly over an area. Imagine a flat area measuring 1m × 1m.

Area = 1m × 1m = 1m²

One metre is 1,000mm. A 1mm layer of rain over this area gives:

Water volume = 1,000mm × 1,000mm × 1mm
= 1,000,000mm³ = 1 litre
1mm rainfall = 1 litre of water per m² (1L/m²)

Example: 10mm of rainfall supplies approximately 10L of water to every 1m² of ground, before run-off, evaporation and water caught by leaves are considered.

Part 2: Nylex Rain Gauge 1000 Collector Calibration Calculation

The circular collector opening has a diameter of 101mm. Its radius is:

Radius (r) = 101mm ÷ 2 = 50.5mm

To simulate 10mm of rainfall, use the collector radius and rainfall depth:

Water volume = π × r² × h
= π × (50.5mm)² × 10mm
= 80,118.47mm³
= approximately 80.12mL

Therefore, pouring approximately 80mL of water evenly into the collector should produce a reading close to 10mm. Each 1mm of rainfall represents approximately 8.01mL collected by this 101mm-diameter opening.

The calibration guide rounds the amount to 80mL. A small reading difference may occur because of the meniscus, pouring loss, installation angle or normal manufacturing tolerance.

Rainfall Reading Rainfall per 1m² Expected Water in Nylex Gauge
1mm 1L/m² Approximately 8.01mL
5mm 5L/m² Approximately 40.06mL
10mm 10L/m² Approximately 80.12mL
15mm 15L/m² Approximately 120.18mL
20mm 20L/m² Approximately 160.24mL
25mm 25L/m² Approximately 200.30mL
Important distinction: 1mm rainfall = 1L/m² describes rainfall over land area. In the Nylex gauge itself, the same 1mm rainfall produces approximately 8.01mL because the circular collector area is only about 8,011.85mm², not 1m².
